Daydrinker
Notes from a Hidden World
Reclaim the afternoon. Drink in daylight, seek the glow, and feel no shame.
The book
2:45 p.m. on a Tuesday. A glass of wine in the sun, and some people wonder what has gone wrong in your life.
2:45 a.m. on a Friday A final round before last call in the pub, and nobody blinks.
Daydrinker is a journey into the hidden world of people who take their drink in daylight, unhurried and unashamed. It asks two questions:
Who's out there, and why?
I'm travelling from Stockholm to Madrid, Paris, Copenhagen, Asia and beyond to find out. The people I'm looking for aren't chasing oblivion. They're after the glow: a softening at the edges of the day, gone by the third glass.
Somewhere between the first glass and the second, a manifesto is taking shape. Its aim is simple: to turn the daydrinker, a word still said with a raised eyebrow, into the daylight drinker, someone who knows exactly what they're doing. Those who already do are gathering in the Daylight Society.
Join the Daylight Society
A loose, friendly fellowship of people who think the afternoon is worth taking back. Members hear first about the book, readings and the occasional daylight gathering in their city. A few emails a year, no more.
Send a field note
Where do you take your daylight drink, and why? A favourite bar, a ritual, a story, a place I should visit. With your permission, the best notes are published here and may find their way into the book.
